Last week my mentor, Todd, from the Alaska State Mentor Program for first and second year teachers came to Akiachak and worked with me. He's not the one I had last year, and at first I was upset about it, but I really enjoyed working with him. (And he brought me chocolate sooo...) It's nice to be told that I'm doing a good job, because sometimes it doesn't feel like it. He gave me some new ideas and teaching strategies to add to my arsenal and talked about what he observed in my room. He only stayed a day, but will be back next month and will hopefully get to stay a little longer! My students behaved pretty well for him. Overall I'm pretty happy with their behavior. I don't have any major behavior issues and feel like I'm doing pretty well with classroom management. I'm loving getting to know these kids. Last year I couldn't get hugs out of hardly any of my students, but this year I get all kinds of love. :) Which reminds me, one of my students from last year saw me as I was walking down the hall this week and gave me a hug so big I almost fell over. He didn't even say anything, just kept on walking, but it totally made my whole day. :)
Saturday Akiachak hosted the regional cross country race. The top 3 from the high school boys' and girls' race advance to state and there was a run for junior high and elementary students. The school celebrated by having a spirit week. Tuesday was sports day, Wednesday was dress up day, Thursday was twin day, and Friday was husky pride day. Each class got points for participating and the winners of spirit week get a pizza party! MY CLASS WON. Actually, we tied with kindergarten, but still. The elementary school also held a poster contest. It was really fun to dress up with my students and decorate the poster. I helped out at Saturday's race, standing along the trail to make sure runners stay on track and providing assistance if needed. I don't mind helping out and it gets me aquatinted with some of the older students. I only know mine, the second grade, and some of the kinders and third grade. Collin, being a substitute, definitely knows more of the kids than I do.
That's all I have for this week, but I have a request for my readers. :) If you have any questions or blog post topic ideas, let me know about them in the comments below! :)
