Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This year is going by SO fast! Before I know it, I will be heading back to Kansas for Christmas break! I’ve stayed really busy this month with teaching and chaperoning wrestling. We have gone to Anchorage and Bethel twice for tournaments and have a junior high tournament in Bethel next week and high school regionals the week after.
Anchorage was really fun. We got to stay in a hotel instead of the school. The school gives the kids and chaperones money for food and we ate at Applebee’s, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Subway, a Chinese restaurant, and the new (and only one in Alaska) Krispy Kreme! When the kids weren’t wrestling, we managed to make it to the 5th Avenue Mall, a higher end mall in downtown Anchorage. I also took a couple of the kids to the Diamond Center Mall. Collin and I went there last year over Thanksgiving break, and there were a few stores, nothing really to be impressed with, but this time I could hardly believe it was the same mall! Now there is a second story with a movie theatre, a few open stores, and a few more still being constructed. On the main level there were a TON more stores. I saw a banner that boasted over 200 stores in the mall. It was definitely a lot bigger than last year. Even the nearby Best Buy, Olive Garden, and Chili’s are now part of the mall and have outdoor and indoor entrances. Crazy! Mr. Barr, my principal from last year, is a principal in Anchorage now and was able to come catch up with us for awhile, so that was really nice. Before heading back to Akiachak, we were also able to take the kids to Get Air, an indoor trampoline place with foam pits, rope ladders, a dodge ball area, a basketball hoop, lots of tramps (of course), and an obstacle course America Ninja Warrior style. It was great to get out of the village for a while and have some meals I didn’t have to cook. :) And we came home with one 4th place medal. No one placed at the most recent Bethel tournament, and we had a 2nd place, two 3rd places, and two 6th places at the first Bethel tournament.
Today is the first day of our Thanksgiving break. Yesterday the school hosted a Thanksgiving feast for the village. The teachers volunteered to help cook turkeys, so I baked my first turkey by myself for that. It turned out pretty good I think. I even managed to carve it, thanks to the help of a Youtube video, haha. Besides turkey, there was stuffing, corn and green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, ham, sweet potatoes, fruit salad, salad, pumpkin pie, muffins, and Tang. It was awesome and we had a good turnout for it. After lunch, 4 of the 17 first graders who came to school left with their parents. The remaining students did an indoor recess video on GoNoodle, played Simon Says, Mumball, had some free time, and then watched Up.
Tomorrow I am going to cook up a small meal for Collin and I. On the menu is a whole chicken, stuffing, green bean casserole, rolls, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. My parents (hi mom and dad!) are going to my Aunt’s for Thanksgiving and we are planning on using Facetime to spend some time together.
We don’t have any major plans for the break, just relax and enjoy our time off. Collin is going to teach the third grade teacher, Mike, how to weld an ice pick to use when he goes manaqing (ice fishing). We might meet up with Mike and his wife and go four wheeling in the tundra, and Collin is having wrestling practice today and Friday. Today I also plan on starting weight lifting back up. I haven’t worked out since wrestling practice and need to get started again. I also plan on watching some episodes of Reign on Netflix.
That’s my month in a nutshell. Hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving! Check out the slideshow for pictures from the last few months! I had technical difficulties adding photos to my last post, so here they are now!
